Medieval torture apparatus. Used on women who were quarrelsome with their husbands or critical of the social order. The metal mask was attached to the woman’s head. Attached was a sharpened mouthpiece, sometimes covered with spikes, placed on the inside of her mouth. If she attempted to speak she would receive a painful punishment to the tongue.
